It all started innocently enough. Once again the LaFont family and it’s hordes of extended relatives would meet in the basement of Richmond Community Church to celebrate Thanksgiving. With Dad and Mom, their four grown daughters and their families, the mob was more than any one house could hold. And so the plans were made, the food dishes to be provided were divided among the women, and the time was set. In true LaFont fashon the meal was prepared and served fashionably late as Mom and the girls scurried to finish the last minute menu details.After enjoying a delicious meal and rubbing our full bellies we began to search for something to do. Board games were usually the next order of business, but somehow this year there was a decided lack of interest in the games. With Christmas music playing in the background, Glenna, the eldest sister, remarked that it was a shame that Christmas was the only holiday with it’s own music. And with that innocent statement (and several slightly warped minds) Turkey Caroling came into being. Using traditional Christmas carol tunes, Thanksgiving words were set to music. We went across the street and sang our Turkey carols to our Pastor and his family in full harmony, in all their splendor. And thus a tradition was born, and over the next several years more Turkey carols were added.
Turkey Carols is a compilation of fun Thanksgiving songs born in the hearts (and slightly warped minds) of 23 family members ranging in age from 1 year old to 67 years old. The book was born out of a deep love of music and a loose grip on sanity. Each contributing member is proud to call Turkey Carols their first published work and it is their hope that you will sing along and serenade your family and friends just as they did that first Thanksgiving several years ago.
